The Bruna Grimaldi Portfolio: Soulful wines from Piedmont’s rising stars
The Bruna Grimaldi winery is located in the heart of Grinzane Cavour, the historical home of the Grimaldi family. It is one of the oldest buildings in the town—in fact, when it was first built, there was no town at all. Though Grinzane remains a small village of less than 2,000 people, the winery is now nestled like a hidden gem among other buildings.
Parts of the family still live in the original house, and the winery, located just out back, shows signs of slow but continuous improvements. The newest addition is a designated tasting room, which just finished construction. Other recent investments include a new aging room with controlled temperature and humidity, newer stainless steel vats, and a brand-new destemmer designed specifically for the tough Nebbiolo grapes.
Despite these modern updates, the rest of the winery remains beautifully rustic. Old concrete fermentation vats are built into the walls, large old barrels stand in the aging rooms, and a constantly changing floor tells the story of past expansions.
The family's winemaking style is equally traditional, driven by a philosophy that the greatest tools are time and patience. Simone considers his process to be a natural one, using no additions aside from a small amount of sulfur at bottling. The grapes are generally destemmed and undergo varying amounts of skin maceration, depending on the specific wine. Vinification occurs naturally at a controlled temperature in stainless steel and concrete tanks, and the wines age in mostly used large Slavonian oak or smaller used barrels. The result is a portfolio of wines that express a profound and authentic sense of place.
