<image:title>Producer Profiles - Aldo Conterno: The New Generation of an Enduring Legacy - The newest generation, Alessandro Conterno, is now fully engaged. Raised in Monforte d’Alba, he was put to work in the vineyards from a young age—pruning, harvesting, and learning English from his grandfather, Aldo.</image:title>
<image:caption>This commitment led him to study oenology at the University of Turin, culminating in a research thesis on the phenolics within the Nebbiolo variety. He joined the winery full-time in November 2020. During the height of the COVID years, he focused heavily on viticulture, applying his lessons and learning further from his uncles. As travel resumed, he shifted his focus to hospitality, learning how to articulate the identity of each wine and single vineyard—a detail we discussed at length during our interview.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For the first ten years, the wines were made at a custom crush facility. It wasn't until 2016 that Ben was able to buy a winery of his own. He has since paid it forward with his project, ‘The Coterie’—the winery where he now crafts his wines. Here, up-and-coming winemakers can rent space, and he also produces private client wines. The Coterie is also part of the Appellation Marlborough Wine organization, a group established to guarantee origin, authenticity, and environmental stewardship, ensuring the future of Marlborough is defined by quality, not just commodity Sauvignon Blanc.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Massey Dacta is their vibrant, classic Sauvignon Blanc, named after the iconic red Massey Ferguson tractors. The name has a charming origin: when Ben was three, he couldn't pronounce "tractor," calling them "dactas" instead. This wine, sourced from their two conventional vineyards, is all about freshness, fun, and juicy fruit. It evokes a sense of nostalgia for a childhood spent on a farm, where you’d leave the house after breakfast and not return until called in for supper.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Zephyr represents the estate wines, crafted from the original, organically farmed home block. While Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Riesling are the main varieties we see in the U.S., they also produce Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The name Zephyr is inspired by the god of the west wind, which Ben describes as their ‘best-kept secret.’ The cooling winds from the south moderate the entire valley floor especially our subregion. Without them, he explains, Dillons Point would have a climate more like Phoenix. The abundant sunlight provides ripeness, but it's the wind that preserves the crucial acidity through keeping the Fahrenheit under 85. Wines under the Zephyr label are precise and pure, showcasing a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and the savory character their vineyard is known for.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Glover property is composed of two home vineyards, each about 75 acres. The original block, planted in '88, boarders the Opaoa River, 3 miles from the confluence, which lends a beautiful, savory saline quality to the wines. They are located in the Dillons Point subregion of Marlborough, which is essentially ‘river delta’ country where the Wairau and Opaoa Rivers meets the Pacific Ocean. Over centuries, the Wairau has flooded and receded, leaving the area with fertile alluvial soil—a stark contrast to the gravel-based soils found in much of the region. This means the soils are fertile, providing a perfect sense of place with their signature structural balance, matching savory notes with the restrained tropical character typical of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.</image:caption>

<image:title>Producer Profiles - Salcheto: A Modern Vision for a Noble Land - Viticulture and Winemaking at Salcheto Salcheto's commitment to quality and sustainability begins in the vineyards. The estate is comprised of over 60 hectares of organically farmed grapes, with a philosophy inspired by biodynamic practices. Michele and his team work to avoid soil compaction and follow the moon cycles for planting and pruning, focusing on a deep connection to the land that is tangible in the final product. While their initial vineyards were located in the valley immediately surrounding the winery, they have since expanded into the Abbadia district to add complexity to their wines with a bit more sand in the soil composition. The winemaking process itself is a meticulous fusion of tradition and technology. All of Salcheto’s wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts. Depending on the wine they use both stainless steel and large wooden vats for fermentation and age the wines in a combination of stainless steel, large Slavonian oak barrels, and some smaller French oak tonneaux. This is often followed by bottle aging at the property as well. The most powerful and age-worthy wine in the portfolio is the Salco cru, which is produced from the estate’s oldest vineyard and is aged for two years in wood and up to four years in the bottle before release. An interesting point of difference is Salcheto's Riserva, which is made using the "Governo Toscano" method. This technique involves slightly over-ripening some of the grapes and allowing them to wither before adding them to the fermentation, a process that creates a more concentrated and structured wine with smoother tannins. This approach demonstrates a willingness to experiment with historical techniques to achieve a desired modern style. Salcheto's pursuit of a pure expression of the fruit is perhaps best highlighted by their Obvius line of wines. These wines are crafted with "grapes only" in stainless steel without any outside influences. This non-interventionist style is made possible by the winery's high-tech cellar, which uses a proprietary CO2 recycling system to prevent oxygenation during fermentation, a technical detail that is key to making pure wines without the need for sulfur. They also do not use fining agents and use a light, three-micron filtration to remove unwanted solids before bottling. This delicate balance of high-tech intervention and minimal chemical input is a clear example of how Salcheto is redefining the boundaries of traditional winemaking. Michele’s newest innovation may be my favorite. He recently started producing a boxed wine named the Fiasco! In the ultimate pursuit of sustainability removing glass altogether from the equation significantly reduces the carbon footprint of a wine. However instead of putting a ‘lesser’ wine into his boxes like the historical box wine market may suggest, he put in a wine of the same quality as his Vino Nobile. The idea is that if you are going to drink great wine often, then it should be as sustainable choice as possible. Due to packaging it must be labeled as a Toscana IGT however and not Vino Nobile.</image:title>

<image:title>Producer Profiles - Salcheto: A Modern Vision for a Noble Land - Montepulciano: The Land of Elegant Sangiovese The Montepulciano region is a true mosaic of terroir, and its distinct character is a crucial part of Salcheto's story. While located in southern Tuscany, its climate is more continental than its neighbors. The region’s proximity to the Apennine Mountains provides cooling currents that create a significant diurnal temperature swing, allowing grapes to develop sugar during the day and preserve a vibrant acidity at night. This delicate balance is a key differentiator from the sun-drenched, warmer climate of Montalcino or the more rustic, galestro-dominated soils of Chianti Classico. As Michele puts it, the Sangiovese from Montepulciano's clay soils and sandy clays is more elegant and fresh, a style he personally compares to a Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir. It focuses on minerality and depth over a forceful, bold character. The profound geological history of Montepulciano is fascinating, the region’s soils are a complex mix of ancient marine and fluvial-lacustrine sands and clays from Pliocene and Pleistocene origins. This is a crucial distinction, as these soil types directly influence the resulting wine's profile. Pliocene soils—composed of thin, mineral-rich marine sands and clays—tend to produce wines with greater concentration, a deep color, marked tannic structure, and floral notes in addition to red fruits. In contrast, the deeper, more siliceous sands and clays of Pleistocene soils, formed by ancient rivers and lakes, yield a less concentrated wine with "smoother," silky tannins and a greater emphasis on ripe red fruit, citrus, and spice. This incredible diversity, which also includes pockets of clay, limestone, and silt , creates a unique, nuanced expression of Sangiovese that sets it apart from its neighbors.</image:title>

      <image:title>Producer Profiles - Marc Gagnon: A Winemaker's Tribute to Napa's Legendary Vineyards - A Journey to Napa's Elite</image:title>
<image:caption>While Marc is successfully hitting his stride, using years of experience to provide the best of what Napa can offer, it took him a lot of dedication and hard work to get there. When I asked Marc about his history in the wine industry, he replied, “I got very lucky, that’s for sure.” While luck may have played a hand in it, his dedication and vision are what truly got him where he is. He mentioned he wanted to be a winemaker from the age of 11, despite having no family history in the wine industry. Marc went to Santa Clara University, despite being accepted to UC Davis and knowing he would want to become a winemaker. He began working in wine in the early 2000s, starting all the way at the bottom by scrubbing floors and sleeping in his car. He worked at Testarossa for a while but then moved to Davis with his then-girlfriend, who was studying law. He got a position at a commercial winery in Lodi where he learned much of the technical side of winemaking and also began his master's program at Davis. Marc began his journey in Napa with Round Pond Estate, and then got his big break at just 26 years old when he was hired by Screaming Eagle as the assistant winemaker, a position he held for three years. In 2012, he accepted a position as the head winemaker of Bryant Family, where he stayed until 2017. Under his winemaking, Bryant achieved its first 100-point wine since Helen Turley's 1997 vintage. This is where Marc and Michael’s relationship began, and once Marc’s contract was up, he moved on to finally begin his own labels under the Fraiche Wine Group.</image:caption>

The unique white Marl and limestone soil provides structure and a savory character that is difficult to find elsewhere. Wines from here are often harvested later, resulting in thicker skins and a magical balance of fresh acidity and concentrated aromas. Badarina Vigna Regnola MGA A special south-facing plot within Badarina with even more white limestone. The grapes here reach peak ripeness, producing wines of greater tension and complexity. In exceptional years, this plot is vinified separately, and after a few years of aging, the family decides to release it as a special bottling. This decision is made on what they genuinely love, not simply on commercial opportunity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Producer Profiles - Bruna Grimaldi: Innovating Upon Tradition - The Land</image:title>
<image:caption>Their first priority is working the land in a thoughtful way, with the long-term goal of ensuring it can provide the best fruit for many years to come. This includes prioritizing soil health and a deep understanding of their ecosystem. Four generations of working the same land give them a much longer view on sustainability. The People They believe that the people who work the land are the heart of the winery. They maintain a small, dedicated team and prioritize the well-being of seasonal workers, fostering a sense of community and care. Commercial Viability Ensuring the winery is commercially sustainable allows them to maintain full control over their process and avoid having to buy grapes or change their style.</image:caption>

<image:title>Producer Profiles - Graci Winery - Mt. Enta, Sicily, Italy</image:title>
<image:caption>Mount Etna is often referred to as an "island on an island" as its climate is so different from the rest of Sicily. The vineyards are planted between 600 and 1000 meters, providing a significant cooling influence. The mountain is planted in a semi-circle, starting on the north side and wrapping around to the east, ending on the south and southwest-facing slopes. The west side is not suitable for planting, as that is where the majority of the volcanic action is still happening. The soil around the mountain is, of course, of volcanic origin. However, there are significant differences from vineyard to vineyard depending on when the eruptions occurred and how the soil broke down. Some vineyards have large black lava stones full of holes and skeletons that create extremely well-drained soils, causing the vines to dive deep into the ground and produce wines with incredible finesse. Others are more of a volcanic ash and become a heavier clay, producing richer, more robust wines.</image:caption>

<image:title>Producer Profiles - Graci Winery - Mt. Enta, Sicily, Italy</image:title>
<image:caption>The first time I visited Alberto Graci’s winery was in 2023 on an incentive trip. I had always wanted to explore the mountain of Etna after learning about this magical region. The wines are, of course, amazing, but more than just that, they are expressive of their home—the super-active volcano that is Mount Etna. Alberto and his right-hand man Riccardo welcomed us to their ancient palmento, a historic 150-year-old winery made from lava rocks that Alberto purchased in the early 2000s. Walking through the giant doors, you are greeted by large oak barrels about two stories high as well as a historic screw press at the end of the hallway. Neither the barrels nor the screw press are currently used, but they have been well-preserved as an ode to the long history of manual labor and slow winemaking. Down the stairs from this museum of barrels is the functioning winery, with modern equipment where Alberto continues this lineage of slow, historic, and heroic winemaking.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Contrada Arcurìa The Arcurìa vineyard sits at an altitude of 600 to 700 meters. The soil is of volcanic origin, brown in color, and rich in volcanic skeletons. The soil is also very rich in iron and high in nitrogen, which provides a very distinct mineral character to the wines. This vineyard is planted with both Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, mostly trained as bush vines (alberello). The Etna Rosso Arcurìa from this vineyard is known for its elegance and freshness. It showcases notes of small red fruits, balsamic herbs, and even citrus. The wine is full-bodied with high acidity to balance it out, with a long mineral finish.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tasting Notes - The Zephyr Portfolio: Freshness and Balance in Dillon’s Point - Zephyr 'Agent' Orange Wine</image:title>
<image:caption>Winemaking: This orange wine is make as a field blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. The wine spent around 75 days on skins to extract color, tannin, and texture. It is bottled with nothing added or taken away, save for a tiny addition of sulphur at bottling. Tasting Note: A delicious and slightly wild wine, it pours a beautiful golden-orange color. The nose is aromatic with notes of mandarin, pear, and peach, all complemented by complex, spicy phenolics from the extended skin contact. It's a textured, savory, and compelling wine for those looking to explore. Ben describes this wine as being similar to a ‘breakfast negroni’, amazing! MSRP: ~ $25/bottle</image:caption>

<image:caption>Winemaking: This is Zephyr's signature, single-vineyard organic Sauvignon Blanc from the Dillons Point sub-region. The winemaking is focused on expressing the vineyard's specific terroir, intentionally steering away from overt tropical notes to capture a more savory, complex profile. Tasting Note: A taut, mineral-driven, and crystalline expression of Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is salty and intense, with a vibrant, pristine texture. The citrus fruit core is complemented by subtle savory notes and fresh salad greens, finishing with a precise, mineral edge. MSRP: ~ $20/bottle</image:caption>

The fruit is sourced from their family vineyards in the Dillons Point sub-region, known for its fertile loam soils which lend depth and aromatics to the finished wine. Tasting Note: A juicy and vivid Pinot Noir focused on bright, supple fruit. It shows lovely raspberry and red cherry notes that are both fresh and floral. <image:caption>Winemaking: This is the value-driven label from the Glover family, producers of Zephyr. The fruit from two conventionally farmed vineyards goes straight into tank to ferment with native yeasts to maintain the distinct vineyard characteristics. The wine is left on its lees to develop complexity before blending and bottling. Tasting Note: A classic and expressive Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The wine pours pale straw with green highlights, opening to a fragrant nose of peach, white grapefruit, tropical passionfruit, and subtle herbaceousness. The palate mirrors the aromas with bright notes of lemongrass, rock melon, juicy lime, and a savory umami-like finish. MSRP: ~ $16/bottle</image:caption>
